I don’t believe Newt Gingrich is really running for President of the United States. I’ve watched every single debate up until this one and his pattern doesn’t suggest someone who wants to be President. Possibly he’s running for VP, but I think he has a very different reason for being on that stage.
Often when a moderator asks a tough question of one of the other candidates and that candidate seems rattled Gingrich will later come on and attack the moderator and the media in general. He usually follows that with a statement like “anyone on this stage would be a good President.”
He rarely goes after the policies of the other candidates. He tends to say something complimentary about his opponents and goes after President Obama. Moments ago he pretty much went around the table and said something nice about everyone.
I think he’s playing the role of Dad. He’s only on the stage to stop Republicans from eating Republicans and to try and keep the party looking reasonable.
